Libya on the north coast of Africa has over 90 percent of its land area covered by the Sahara Desert. Today it is a socialist state and is mainly inhabited by Arab Muslims. The territory was once dominated by the Berbers a non-Arab people who were at one time mostly Christians. The Berbers successfully withstood numerous invasions before finally being overrun by Arabs in the seventh century.
